All We Need is a Bit of Fairy Magic
I discovered a fairy house in the woods the other day.
It was the cutest little house inside the remnants of a fallen tree by a trail in the middle of the woods of Northwest Portland.
I was alone in an area I’d never been to before.
The fairy house let me know I was exactly where I needed to be.
I always am.
As I made my way up the steep trail, breathing hard, I met a woman. She was short, with a hunched back that made it difficult for her to look up. She used a hiking pole for balance.
She smiled like she’d been waiting for me and we struck up a conversation. Her New York accent made me feel at home.
I found out she’s 76 and hiking isn’t the only thing she does to stay fit.
Before I knew it, she flung her walking pole to the side, took a breath, moved her hands kung fu style and kicked her leg in the air, hip height. Then she turned and did the same with her other leg.
She was extremely pleased with herself and I found myself clapping.
Our paths crossed four times on that hike (yes, four), and when I saw her drive off in her car my hand went up to wave goodbye to my new friend but she didn’t see me.
After that hike in the fairy woods of Northwest Portland my life made a little more sense.
I knew that all I have to do is to keep walking, keep exploring, and all I need is right there on the trail waiting for me.
